Five Dachshunds in a Smart Car

After returning from our one night away vacation this past weekend we came upon a disaster. Our air conditioning had broken. It may not sound like a disaster but when it's 100 degrees outside in Houston, it's definitely a disaster. Due to the insane heat that was in our house we were forced to evacuate. We had to load up all five Dachshunds and our one very large Pit Bull and head to my Father-in-law's house 40+ minutes away. My husband took the Pit in his car and I took the five Dachshunds in mine. Here are some silly photos of our adventure.

Look at Sammy's face in the back..haha!

Home Flea Remedy UPDATE!!...& Additional News

Two days after the home flea remedy wash & spray treatment I was checking my dogs for fleas and there were none to be found. However the very next day I found a flea on my couch and that is where it all began again. The day after I found a flea on my couch I found two fleas on my carpet and at least one to three fleas on each dog. Originally I thought that maybe the wash & spray treatment didn't work as well as I thought but after some flea research apparently fleas can set up house keeping in your carpet, furniture, or any other fabric-like materials. Therefore even though I washed everything that could fit in my washing machine unfortunately my carpet and couches could not. So I set off on a Petsmart* adventure to find a new remedy. I came accross Sentry Home Sergeant's Home and Carpet Spray Flea Control Plus Odor Control for $10.39 (with your Petsmart Rewards card*). I purchased this item in hopes that it will huff and puff and blow the flea's houses down! I will try it tomorrow and we will see for sure in a few days. I will post with a follow up update.

Here is the item I purchased...

ADDITIONAL NEWS...

My poor poor Tootsie Roll has finally came into her first heat at 8 1/2 months of age. We originally thought that she had already had a small heat because of her age and also because our little boy Rowdy was going NUTS a few weeks ago, but we were oh so wrong. We had plans to go out of town for a couple of weeks now and had made arrangements for a family member to watch our precious pups while we were gone for our one night away vacation. Friday morning we woke bright and early, packing our bags ready to hit the road when my husband noticed a couple of drops of red substance and a very swollen Tootsie bottom. The dreaded "heat" came practically as we were on our way out the door. We couldn't change our plans now even as much as I hated to leave my baby girl in her condition, so we called the dog sitter and confirmed that it would be okay that he still watch over the "kids". He assured us it would be fine and that he would keep Rowdy the horn dog away from our innocent little girl. It is not healthy for a dog to get pregnant in her first heat and it is also not healthy for a female to be fixed before the first heat comes and goes. Some vets will say that it can stunt her growth or shorten her life span and we were just not willing to risk it. You should always consult your own personal vet as to what he or she recommends for spay or neuter time frames for your own personal pets. Each breed may vary.
Anywho on our way home Saturday we decided it would be best to stop at Petsmart* (considering we already needed help with flea control) and pick up some big girl panties for our big girl. Some brilliant man or woman created protective panties for dogs! They come in a variety of colors, sizes, and have male and female options. They are simply absorbent cloth diapers that velcro on and have a hole in the back for the tail. We knew Tootsie wouldn't be a big fan but after an hour or so of chasing her own bottom she finally gave up and accepted her new temporary pants.

Aren't they cute? With the help of these doggy diapers and a little separation from the anxious Rowdy I think we will make it through Tootsie's first heat like a piece of cake. Next step? Make an appointment with our vet!

Here is a photo of the doggy diapers that I purchased...

Home Flea Remedy?

I noticed this morning that Tootsie had fleas. My first reaction was.. "NOOOO!!!!". I didn't notice them on the other dogs but then again, their coats are much darker. I didn't want to have to purchase expensive pills or shampoos because chances are, with 5 dogs in our house, the fleas won't stay gone long. So the first thing I did was start searching for flea home remedies. Everything that I read said two things. Tea tree oil shampoo and lavender. The all natural ingredients in the tea tree oil shampoo was supposed to kill the fleas and the lavender is supposed to repell them for the future. BINGO! I had both of those items. I had recently purchased some tea tree oil shampoo from Sally's Beauty Supply but I didn't like it at all. I had actually been using it for shaving cream, hehe! I checked out the ingredients and they are 100% organic. Next item, the lavender. I didn't have any fresh cut lavender considering I live in the Houston suburbs but I did have some lavender body spray. I checked out the ingredients and none would be harmful if a small amount was spritz onto the dogs after their bath. And so the bathing began. Bathing five dogs alone is quite a challenge, but we seemed to have come out alright. As I was bathing each dog I noticed that Tootsie wasn't the only one with fleas. Luckily the tea tree oil shampoo was killing them and I watched the dead fleas slowly float down the drain. Success! At least the current fleas were deceased. After I bathed and towel dried each dog I gave them each one spritz of lavender mist onto their back and also sprayed their collars. I checked them all later and there wasn't a flea to be found. Not only were they flealess but their coats are super soft and they smell amazing. Just to be safe I am also washing all of the towels, sheets, and blankets in the house. Anything that the dogs may have had contact with. I sprayed the couches and carpet with Febreeze because the chemicals will kill whatever existing fleas are left and also leave my house smelling so fresh and so clean clean. Here are photos of the products that I used...

I'll keep you posted and let you know how this flea remedy is working!

I LOVE "CRAFTYPETSTUFF"!

About a week ago I was searching online for cute Dachshund things, specifically things with piebald Dachshunds on it to represent my baby girl Tootsie Roll. I love www.Etsy.com so I began searching there. On that website I discovered some of the cutest dog signs to hang in your home. I even found one with a piebald Dachshund on it that resembled Tootsie! I was so excited to find something so adorable with such cute saying on them, but I was in a hurry that day so the purchase would have to wait until the following day. The next day I got on www.Etsy.com to purchase the item and it was listed unavailble. I began a frantic search everywhere I could think of and then voila! I found my sought after item on www.Ebay.com. I purchased the item immediately. I could not wait to recieve it! I purchased the item for $17.00 and $6.00 shipping. Honestly, I wasn't paying much attention to the price, I was just thrilled to find my Tootsie Roll replica. Soon after I recieved an email from the seller with a sincere apology. She claimed to have set the price too high and the true price for the item was only $12.99. She refunded the rest of the money that I had already paid. I was extremely impressed. I didn't even notice the difference in the price yet she was honest and brought it to my attention. I bet 98% of sellers would've taken that extra six dollars and not thought twice about it. Touched by the sellers honesty, we began emailing back and forth for a bit and I knew I just had to share with my blogger friends some of the creative items this seller makes.

If you think the cuteness stops there, think again! "Craftypetstuff" also makes signs for wire haired Dachshunds, long haired Dachshunds, and many other different breeds of dogs. She even has some signs with goats that are just too sweet! She will mix and match which sign you want with which pet you want. Not only are these signs adorable and would be a great addition to your home, but extremely low priced from an honest seller.

You can find "Craftypetstuff" by searching for "Craftypetstuff" on www.Google.com, www.Etsy.com, www.Ebay.com, and www.Amazon.com.

If you ask me this is a must have item!!

Dobby & Jenny

Here is a photo of Dobby and Jenny, our house guests...

Photobucket

Dobby is the double dapple on the left and Jenny is the red one on the right. Dobby is only about 7 months old and Jenny is 10 years old. Look at those cuties wagging their tails! We love having them around and so do Rowdy, Sammy, and Tootsie. Tootsie and Dobby are about the same age and size. They have been having so much fun playing and getting into mischief.

Not 1..Not 2...Not 3...Not 4...But 5 Dachshunds Are In My House Right Now!

No, you did not misread the title. There are currently five miniature dachshunds scampering about throughout my house. If there is something left out, consider it gone. Cords out? Chewed. Doors open? Territory marked! In addition to my own three doxies I am also keeping my sister-in-law's double dapple puppy and ten year old red mini doxies. Chaos is upon us, but I am in Dachshund heaven!

Pictures coming soon but in the mean time check out my three babie's mini pages in the side bar.

Dachshund Stories...The Beginning

This story is COMPLETELY true.

Before I begin the story of  how my Dachshund family began let me take a moment to thank you for visiting my blog about my own personal Dachshund stories. Having stayed at home with my three Dachshunds for quite sometime now I have realized that my dogs are absolutely hilarious. I originally thought that staying at home would be boring but the things that my dogs do throughout the day keep me in stitches. I find so much joy in my dogs that I thought, "Hmm.. why shouldn't I share my joy with others through the wonderful world wide web?". This blog will contain pictures, videos, and stories of the funny and interesting things that my three "kids" do while I'm at home with them. I hope you find this blog light-hearted, up-lifting, and a brightener to your day.

And the story begins...

March 2010
It is early morning, pouring rain, and there I am in my dress clothes hiding under an umbrella standing in the mud with my red miniature Dachshund, Dixie, begging her to do her business so I can get on with my day. I acquired Dixie from my ex-husband for an early Christmas present that previous fall. Needless to say Dixie Land Delight made a better mate for me than he did which left me broke, working two jobs and living in a cracker box of an apartment on the outskirts of Houston, scraping change to try to take care of myself and my little girl. With my day beginning at 7 a.m. and sometimes ending as late as 11 p.m., I knew that my little Dixie Land needed a better home. Dachshunds need a place to roam, a place to call their own. Our tiny apartment just didn't do the trick. Dixie was kenneled throughout the day while I was at work which left her to have to "hold it" for far too long. Not only were there many accidents for me to clean up along with my late arrival home from work but she was also coming into heat and had contracted worms from the doggy doo-doo area at my apartment complex. It was clear that as much as I hated to admit it, I was an unfit Dachshund Mom. I could not give Dixie the TLC that was needed. I knew I needed to find her a home. I put it off as long as I could, but I knew I was being selfish and needed to put Dixie's needs before my own.
Dixie was a wonderful little girl, always showering me with kisses and happy to see me after my long day of "bringing home the bacon". She was the perfect companion for me and a true blessing from God during those rough times in my life going through my divorce. I did not want to have to say goodbye to my best friend, my cuddle buddy. She was who greeted me and who made me feel safe. I had never lived by myself before therefore I found her presence an uplifting comfort. I figured I had a long way to go before another relationship came around or a career, whichever came first, so I knew what I had to do. I searched and searched and found the perfect home for my little Dixie Land Delight. A friend of the family and my Step-Mom's coworker, I knew this was someone I could keep in contact with and make sure my girl was being treated right. And so the day came when my friend arrived to pick up her new pet pal. I wasn't sure I could do this. I gathered her things as I wiped a tear from my eye and tried to look strong.
"Please, let me pay you. I know how much you love this dog."
"No, no. Money is the last thing I want. Just take good care of her. She needs to go to the vet and I just can't afford it."
I carried Dixie to my friend's car and as she licked my nose one last time, I completely lost it. I couldn't hold myself together anymore. The one thing I had to come home to I'm having to give away. I know I chose her a good home but the selfish side of me screamed "NO! DON'T DO IT!" inside of me so loudly that I could no longer hear myself think. I begged my friend to leave as quickly as possible before I ran out of tissues. I watched Dixie Land Delight push her nose against the window as her chariot rolled away. I cried myself to sleep that night. I had never been without a dog. First a Golden Retriever, then my two Maltese, and now my Dachshund. I was in love. I knew I would always have to have a Dachshund in my life after the way Dixie touched my heart so deeply. Unfortunately I was in no condition to have one under my "roof", if that is what you'd like to call it. I knew it would be a while before I could properly welcome another four legged friend into my life.

May 2010
It was an average Monday with the usual hustle and bustle of my daily duties at my job. Eight in the morning is when I was to punch in the time clock and report to the front desk to assist the receptionist in whatever duties were necessary. I had overslept that morning and did not put much effort into my appearance. Afterall, who did I need to impress? I was positive I was going to stay single for at least another five years or even more. After my rotten divorce and too many rotten dates I had sworn off men and promised myself to only focus on work and my much needed education.
I was looking down, focused on my paperwork when I heard a man's voice.
"Hello."
"...(awkward pause)..."
I was awstruck by this gentlemen in Wrangler jeans with his well-groomed, clean cut appearance paired with his striking blue eyes.
"I need to leave this at the front desk for my cousin."
"Hello. Oh, alright."
"...(awkward pause)...(smile)..."
"Her name is Candace."
"Oh yes, I know Candace. I'll be sure she gets it."
"Okay...Thanks..."
"Yeah, sure, you're welcome."
As I watched this Wrangler man exit the building I knew I must be blushing.
"I think you found a boyfriend!", joked the receptionist.
"Yeah right!"
I was once again looking down, trying my best to focus on my work after such an eye-opening encounter when I heard the man's voice again.
"Oh I meant to tell you, her last name is Smith." (alternate name)
"Oh yeah, I know. Thanks."
"Ok.. (smile).. Thanks."
WOW. Was this Wrangler wrapped package flirting with ME? Surely not. I could not possible be so lucky to get attention from someone so breathtakingly hansome.
I delivered the item as promised but had to add..
"Dude, your cousin is HOTT."
"That's funny, because he wants to come back and get your number."
Was I dreaming?! This cannot be so!
I got a phone call Wednesday and our first date was Friday. On our date I suppose our conversation was reasonably normal for a first date. Throughout our conversation Ricky told me that he had two miniature Dachshunds. I was immediately SOLD. A handsome southern, single man with two miniature Dachshunds. What more could a girl want? I knew it was love. We were married on December 19, 2010. On December 22, 2010 I was presented with an early Christmas present. A piebald miniature Dachshund puppy which I named Tootsie Roll. Our family now contained of us along with 3 beautiful miniature Dachshunds.

I hope you have enjoyed my first posted Dachshund Story. Next I will be posting photos of our three lovely babies. Thanks for reading!
